Avataras/Incarnations Of Lord Vishnu (Other than the Dasavatara)

The dasavatara (10) incarnations/avataras of Lord Vishnu commonly known to Hindus are – Matsya (Fish), Koorma (Tortoise), Varaha (Boar), Narasimha/Nrisimha, Vamana, Parasurama, Rama, Krishna, Balarama, Kalki.

Here we look at some other mythological personalities who are also identified by some scriptures as avataras/incarnations of lord Vishnu. They are -

Santhanagopala Krishna Mantra – To Have Children, For Welfare Of Children

Om Devakiisutha govinda vasudeva jagalpathe
Dehi me thanayum Krishna thwamahum sharannam gatha


The Santhanagopala mantra is a prayer to Lord Krishna to bless the devotee with a child or to protect one’s child. It is very beneficial for expecting mothers to chant this mantra 21 times daily, during pregnancy period so that their child is protected from all misfortune. 

This mantra can also be used by couples to be blessed with a child. Couples who wish for a child are required to chant this mantra 108 times in the morning while holding a little copper vessel with ghee in it. The mantra chanting has to be done in the morning, and the ghee should be consumed by the husband and wife on an empty stomach. Repeat this ‘sadhana’ for 41 continuous days with devotion and lord Krishna will fulfill your wish. 

[Note - On days when either the husband or wife are not able to do the mantra recital, it is enough for any one of them to do and just pray for the other.]

Rudra/Shiva Gayatri Mantra – To get wealth and overcome diseases

Mahadevaya dheemahi
Thanno rudra prachodayathu

Lord Shiva is the universal destroyer, healer and teacher. Though Lord Shiva is mostly known to be easily angered , he is also one who is easily pleased. The regular chanting of this Shiva mantra in repetitions of 54 or 108 times will please Lord Shiva immensely. This mantra can be used to assist while suffering from severe diseases and/or poverty. Lord shiva is also the god of auspiciousness and his blessings will bring happiness wealth and health to your family.



Narasimha / Nrisimha Gayatri Mantra – To ward off evil ghosts and enemies

Om vajranaghaya vidmahe
Theeshnnadhamshtraya dheemahi
Thanno nrisimha prachodayathu

No evil can stand against the infinite power and anger of Lord Narasimha/Nrisimha. The regular chanting of this mantra for 108 times in the morning will help to get protection from lord Nrisimha/Narasimha. This form of lord Vishnu is revered as the destroyer of ghosts, asuras and all evil. But, this avatar is also considered to be one in which lord Vishnu’s infinite compassion towards his devotee is expressed. Hence this mantra may be used to please lord Nrisimha and get his blessings to overcome enemies or ghosts. [NOTE – It is important to maintain saadhana if one intends to practice this mantra and attain mantra siddhi]

Vasudevaya dheemahi
Thanno Vishnu prachodayahtu

Lord Vishnu is also known as the protector amongst the holy trinity. Regular chanting of this mantra for 108 times daily in the morning will protect family members from misfortune,disease & enemies. The chanting of this mantra together with family members will bring better unity and peace of mind among in the family.
