ReplyDeleteI am deeply concerned about the unwillingness of the well-off hindus to help their less fortunate fellow hindu brethren. We all go to temples, do various pujas, celebrate festivals, buy plots, houses, cars go to expensive hotels and enjoy life in various ways. All this makes us spend lot of money. BUT, DO WE FOR A MOMENT THINK ABOUT THOSE NOT SO FORTUNATE BROTHER HINDUS WHO DO NOT GET EVEN SUFFICIENT FOOD? .
Today, on MAKAR SANKRANTI I went to my local temple carrying 5 packets of gud, til and khichdi. I could find only 4 beggars and one packet was left which I carried with me as I moved around the temple from one deity to another. Suddenly a young man on crutches hobbled in went to the idol of Lord Hanuman, applied a bit of sindur from the toe of Hanumanji, payed obeisance and quickly hobbled out. He was obviously very poor.Unfortunately, our priests in temples do not bother about poor devotees and only give prasad to the rich because the rich give them dakshina and the poor cannot.I gave the left over packet to him which he shyly accepted.
Can't we all Hindus look after the poor Hindus and ensure that they get their basic needs of food, shelter and clothing? Over the last 500 years millions of Hindus have converted to Islam and Christianity because we do not care for the poor and deprived sections of society.
Thank you for your comment Mr.Ashutosh...I agree with your view that we should all stop being biased towards poor people, and instead use our possible means to help our fellow brethren...No amount of rituals or prayers will be useful if we don't the needy when it is possible...
DeleteDear Ashuthosh...Even i had the same feeling, I once realized that we don't go to see the priest we go to see our God..But this kind of biase happens even in big big temples..even n Tirumala it is the same case when a VIP comes to visit the shrine you are put on hold.It is not the GOD who has put on hold it is the people who do it.We need brin the change.
DeleteDear Ashutosh,
ReplyDeleteI also share the same sentiments as you... But it is well said than done.A lot of logistics are involved. Individual donors cannot search for individual receivers. There need to be a centralised processing point - same as the CPU in the computer. The temples can be a good CPU. But how to control it? That is the million dollar question. Because the MAYA(Illusion) of the 'Material world' can temptate the best of the very best man. Also the recivers become lazy as they get things without effort. Please don't ever imagine that by feeding free the poor people will become good hearted. For that matter a good hearted man will never accept an alm(like the handicapped fellow in your story. He might have accepted your packet may be not to hurt your feelings!). So what is the way forward?
Thinking of that - just while typing - I think the only way is to educate people. The temple trusts can make eductional institutions(not only Engg. & Medical colleges)of different class.(Yes, I mean different class in comforts and facilities.) Then only there will be desire to acquire knowledge. Food and facilities can be provided free.
Alas! But the very system is already there in the society. What we don't have is the selfless managers.
Remember - Selfless managers will evolve only from a selfless society. So the society need to become selfless and bring to book the 'selfish managers'. Just think of the following three points and come to your own conclusion. 1)Scam in the purchase of coffins for the dead in the Kargil war. 2)Scam in the relief funds received for Bhuj earthquake victims. 3)Scam in relief fund for the 'Tsunami' victims.
This stigma will go only through education(information)(knowledge). But vested interests always see that others are not educated(means education is not given) so that they will always be on their knees. All must try to change this situation.

ReplyDeleteWhy do Hindus don't pray sincerely for a person who is caught in calamity?
ReplyDeleteThere are prayer towers for Christians and many Christians volunteer to prayer without expecting money and pray sincerely. Why is that absent in Hinduism?
The dear and near ones are emotionally disturbed and cannot pray continuously. When approaching others money comes to place. Why is this in Hinduism?
