Life After Death Explained

Life after death is a topic that divides many religions and cultures. The fear that death strikes in us, and the wonder of being alive are two things which are present in everyone. The mystery surrounding death has been tried to be explained by many scholars, but the irony remains, that you cannot explain clearly until you experience death, and you cannot explain once you experience death. But, our Hindusim has a remarkable explanation for what happens after death and about the cycle of life and death, almost unlike the concepts found in other religious system.

It is said that every deed/action that we perform on this earth leads to the accumulation of 'karma'. This karma is allotted, based on whether the deed was good or bad. When the permitted living time is over, an estimation of a final 'karma' is made for the particular individual, and he/she is reborn on this earth based on his karma. The good deeds lead to positive karma while bad deeds obviously lead to negative karma. The karma from previous lives are almost accumulated throughout the following births. This accumulated karma helps in deciding the status and fate in the next birth. This process continues until the soul attains a stage where only positive karma is there. This particular stage is called 'moksha' or salvation.

It is said that it takes thousands of births for a soul to pass from animals to humans, and it takes even longer for the soul to go from a normal human to a good natured human . Thus, a soul is trapped in this almost never ending to and fro journey between bodies. Only god has the power to make changes in this journey of the soul.  The fastest way to attain moksha (or) salvation in this kali yuga , is said to be devotion. Sincere devotion is like a large saw which chops away chunks of bad karma. No amount of temple visits, nor expenses can replace the simple emotion of devotion.

Thus, according to our Hinduism, there definitely is life after death, the only difference is that we consider life and death as a continuous cycle which complement each other. So, every birth is for a new death and every death is for a new life, and hence these terms almost seem meaningless.

Hope to know the views and opinions of the fellow readers on OnlyHinduism. Long live Hinduism

  1. Instead of pondering on life after death, please think and pray to the Devi that we should attain a place in her lotus feet, which is salvation itself, so that we will be devoid of any karmas and enjoy her everlasting divine bliss.

  2. After death the physical body changes into astral body and depending upon the pava and punya of the person
the astral body goes through various hardships that cannot be under gone inthe materialworld before taking another birth. The soul itself selects the nature of birth . We have come across many incidents where a person is able to recall his previous birth. To avoid the birth death cycle we have been ordained to surrender bothgood and unavoidable karmas to the Almighty.

    1. As per my understanding, the body only get various hardship, the soul therein is only witness to them.

    2. The mind remains with the soul till moksha. Mind experiences hardships and happiness. So the soul, with or without body experiences hardships and happyness. BG: Nature makes one work and soul experiences the feelings.

  3. we get moksha only when the positive & negative karmas are balanced, in which case no need to born again which is called Moksha.
The easiest way to attain Moksha is to kill our EGO which means I am not the doer of any karma as it is divine command, I follow in which case no positive/negative karma for which I need to be born. As I am not the doer but God is, God takes all positive negative effects of karmas and my balance is zero-no need to be born but mingles with almighty which salvaion/moksha/nirvana/mukthi

  4. The balancing of the Karma is conceived by mind (Chit)and to attained Moksha Ego needs to be killed, is understood. The Ego is part of mind (Chit), and as soon the mind goes, the Ego goes, and no killing. The mind, conceive'r of various thoughts when vanish, one attain the highest bliss known as Moksha.

  6. The cycle of life and death goes as per the teachings of Bhagvad geeta , one has to shed old body and take a new one till the Karma counts to zero- no negative and positive karmas. We should try to do good deeds without any Ego to break through this cycle.

  11. This is not a comment rather a question...
i lost my grandfather and am still not able to get over the fact that he is gone. I want to talk to him , want to say him may things. But only if he could listen. My ancestors say that when a person dies his soul always remains with those people whom he loved the most.
I know I'm one of those people who was loved the most.
I just want to know if he can see and listen to me ?

    1. Om..Namasthe Anonymous...everyone has a tough time dealing with the death of a loved one...but, you must realize that nobody can escape death, since it is the most definite fact of life...the moment a person is born, his/her time of death is also decided by God...do not live in the past and regret the loss of your grandfather...instead pray to god for the salvation of your grandfather's soul...humbly ask god to bless your grandfather's soul and absolve his sins...that is the greatest help which you can do to any loved one...the soul is not meant to stay on this earth or to be attached with any loved one...the ultimate aim of any soul is to merge with the universal brahman and attain moksha...so make sure that you accept this fact and pray for your grandfather..i would suggest that you read and understand the ' srimad bhagavatham' to guide you in this regard..'srimad bhagavatham' is a great holy scripture composed by Sri Veda Vyasa and is an eye opener for every human being...though there are many interesting stories in it, you have to understand the essence of life which is actually represented through those stories...do not just take the stories by it's face value..then you will attain great mental satisfaction and peace...May God bless you and your grandfather

  12. Dear Sir, I have a few doubts in my mind and I hope that you could provide me with an answer to them.

Goddess Durga rides the lion/tiger. Both these beasts are carnivores and must eat flesh of another to live. We as humans are forbidden to have non veg while doing puja or any other rituals to the goddess ( we are supposed to be very pure) Is this not a contradiction?

In the beginning of this creation, there was no invention or discovery of our daily needs done. I believe there was hardly any clothes even to wear. Our gods and goddesses are depicted as wearing jewellery, silk dresses, crowns etc etc and also they are shown as riding certain birds or animals (Science teaches us that these animals were evolved after million of years of evolution and adaptation to the living style) thus sir, at that period of the beginning of creation do you feel these modern time animals and birds would have existed to serve our gods and goddesses and there were dress makers and jewellers to decorate them?

Sir, One last doubt. We do rituals with milk on our deities in temples. If milk is produced out of blood of a mammal, then how is it a vegetarian and a pure product for puja etc?.

  13. Try to understand -eternal life -eternal energy-eternal death- - positive to negative-- negative to positive --no charge zero- -our consciousness- vishay vasna-iccha-dwandva---- mind----creator of universe--nyey nyan nyata nyangamya--vidya avidya -satya -asaytya

Nothing remains constant -change is rule of nature-continuous evolution
    everything is changing
level of consciousness 'chetna' is also changing there is no permanence --- today's truth tomorrow's false---- no permanent peace no permanent noise-all humanity also goes in changes ---from atom to planet to galaxy universe-everything is moving is changing --is converting --also the life. kshar-akshar- vyakt awyakt-dark -light-good-bad-janm-mrityu-living non living --gyan agyan--punya pap -these all all eternal-- meaning of all these are same no difference---- difference is in our perception perception is also changing.----nothing can be stable-------only one way to go as per natural changes--get adapt with change-- things will flow- flow ----just follow the rule of cause and effect-- seek for peace will yours- seek for glory glory will yours what you seek you can get but it will not with you forever -it will change you will also change go on and on with time that is only choice for one.rest all leave it to your current beliefs of god religion in ever path eternal journey of life your ''shradha' will help you you will be controlled and protected by your concepts about your god.

in constantly changing world also one need understand following from vedic slokas

anyanyashinto ma ye jana parupasate tesha nityabhiutktana yogskhem vahamyaham..

    aum purnmand purnmindam purnat purnamudachyate
    purnyashya purnamaday purnamewawshiyate. '''

aum sahnawwatu shahnaubhunaktu shaviryamkarwawahay teajswinawadhitmastu ma vidvishayavahai.

  15. Devi Durga is shown to ride those animals and control them... That means that she is trying to convey the message to us that control anger.. dont hurt anybody... control cruelty to others... dont treat anybody with cruelty.

You see Gods & Goddesses wear jewelry coz, we modern people in modern society think Gods & godesses like that.. we love our gods.. so we make them wear love clothes and jewels...

Actually what is God? God is just an energy.. A mode or method of teaching people good things... The main thing is Karma... for eg: see swaraswati devi... by worshipping her we are worshipping education or study which is actually karma... when you are studying you are doing a work or a verb or a karma...
