Rituals & Slokas For Durga Pooja/Navratri Celebration [Part 2]

On the 8th day day of Durga pooja/Navratri, we have to perform special poojas throughout the day for Devi Durga. The usual practice is to perform 4 poojas on this day, one each during sunrise, noon, sunset and at night.

In the morning, the devotee should get up before sunrise and finish bath. It is advisable to prepare some form of simple dish or delicacy to use during pooja for Durga devi. [ One simple dish is a mixture of honey, raisins and bananas].

Place the dish in a small utensil in front of the idol of Durga devi. Now sit in front of Durga devi together with your family, and invoke Lord Ganesha with the following sloka. Hold a flower in your right hand above the utensil while chanting the sloka. Chant the sloka 3 times and then place the flower on the books.

Mudakaratha modakam sada vimukthi saadhakam
Kaladhara vatamsakam vilasilola rakshakam
Anaaya kaika naayagam vinasiteibha daityakam
Nataasubhasunashakam namamitham vinayagam

Now invoke Lord Dakshinamoorthy (the universal guru) using the following sloka, while holding a flower in your right hand. Place the flower at the foot of the lamp after chanting the sloka.

Agnyana thimiraandhasya
Gnyana Anjana Shalaakaya
Chakshuhu unmelitaam yenam
Tasmey sri guruve namaha

Now chant the following slokas at the times mentioned alongside. Chant each sloka 21times. Try your best to do the prayers with all family members together, this will enhance devotion and unity amongst the family. If possible, shower flowers on the devi photo and books after each chanting, and light camphor after each session of prayer.
