Simple ritual to improve mental functions

The Banyan tree has great significance in Hinduism. Even in a scientific perspective, Banyan trees are of great value to the environment. They are one of the longest living things in the world (there have been claims of banyan trees that are more than 2500 years old !!!). The large foliage cover and plentiful fruits that they provide act as mini ecosystems on their own by providing shelter to a large number of animals. Also, it is even said that Banyan trees are on par with the Ozone layer in terms of purification and protection. These may be some of the reasons why our great sages conferred so much respect and importance to the Banyan tree.

The following is a simple ritual to counter the malefic effects of mercury and to improve peace of mind, intelligence, mental functioning, reduce tensions, etc. This ritual is highly beneficial for young employees and students. Every day, after bathing in the morning, stand in front of a banyan tree and chant the following mantras (3 times each) :

om buudesaya namah
om sravyaya namah
om sreyaya namah
om aiswaryavaradaya namah
om gyanamayaya namah
om prathama poojithaya namah
om viswasthannave namah
om aanandapoorithaya namah
om shaddguna sevyaya namah
om kanakadarine namah
om vishnuve namah
om paramatmane namah

Then while chanting 'om shree paramatmane namah' , perform a circumambulation (pradakshina) of the the Banyan tree 7 times.

Repeat this simple prayer for 11 consecutive days. Make sure that you perform the ritual and the chanting slowly , without being in any haste. Try to breathe slowly and deeply and clear your mind of any negative thoughts. It is also highly recommended to sit under a Banyan tree and chant the mantra for a few mins.

Simple New Year Ritual- for happiness, health and prosperity

Om.With the advent of a new year, everyone’s mind is sure to be filled with hope for some positive change in life. This post is about a simple new year ritual which anybody can perform to cleanse their body and soul , so as to invite positive divine blessing for a better year ahead. On December 31st or January 1st,  after you finish your morning bath, take a bowl of water and place it in front of a photo/idol of your favourite god/goddess (based on your convenience, you may also light a lamp on either side of the lamp). Then take a fistful of salt and place it on a plate beside you. Now take a pinch of salt with the thumb and ring finger of your right hand. Now chant the following well-known sloka :

Om asathoma sathgamaya thamosoma jyothirgamaya mrityorma amruthamgamaya

[The above sloka is a request to get God's blessings so that we are guided towards truth, brightness/prosperity and immortality/health]

Then chant the following mantra which is a general prostration to the God of the universe, village and family (though they are all the same supreme God we are just paying respect to the various forms )

Om namo parabrahmane hara shree gramadevatayai hari shree paradevatayai namosthuthe

Then put the salt into the bowl of water. Repeat this process until all the salt in the plate has been transferred into the bowl of water. Then keep the bowl of water closed for atleast 41mins. Then take this bowl of water and pour it over your whole body and then take a bath (it can be done in the evening also). This simple ritual is a great cleanser of negativity from the body and mind.

Om.Please do share your resolutions, plans and wishes for 2013 in the comments below.

Housewarming Kerala Style - Simplified (Part 2)

Coming to Gruhapravesham, the same procedure used for Gruharambham, can be followed as far as the Muhurtham is concerned. The rituals may vary a little in that it will be nice if the Gruhapravesham is done immediately after the Ganapathy Homam in the early morning during the time of Sunrise at that location. Early morning is always supposed to be good or you can go for a good Muhurtham for the purpose by a learned Astrologer. Appropriate offerings should be made to Bhara Devatha and in local temples also, before Gruhapravesham.

Usually the Pooja is arranged in front of the house towards one side, by the Sthapathy (Moothassari). It is nice that no one should be at the house when the family first enters into the house. It is well and good if it is possible to go round the house (Pradikshanam / circumambulate) once by the members of the family, headed by the lady of the house carrying the lighted lamp in both hands, obtained from the Sthapathy, after giving him the 'Sampradaya Dakshina', accompanied by the man of the house with the treasure chest in his hand, followed by other members of the family, with milk and pot, water-pot (Kumbhakudam) etc. Using the right leg, they should enter the house, and the lighted lamp should be placed at the North-East corner of the room, where they entered first. From the same lamp, the lady of the house can ignite the hearth in the kitchen, for boiling the milk. Afterwards, the milk should be given to all present at the function. The workers or laborers should be paid first, tips as a token of indebtedness towards them for having built the house for the family. It is advisable to give a lime along with a betel leaf to everyone irrespective of those with gifts.

In either case, whether it is Gruharambham or Gruhapravesham, you should be present on the spot on the second day, to avoid the so called 'Vischithi dosham'. You should stay and sleep over the night on the second day also in your new house.

Your Home is a 'Devalayam'; the man there is the Chief Deity, the lady of the house-hold is the Goddess, and the children are Upa Devathas. This concept will bring prosperity to your Home. Whatever you have, belongs to God; you are only a Caretaker. Do all unto Him with full Providence and Dharma. “Dharmo rakshathy, rakshitha”- Dharma, when protected, protects the follower. The End.

Housewarming Kerala Style - Simplified (Part 1)

House warming ceremony or Gruhapravesham or 'Palukachu' in Malayalam, is done after the construction of a house, which is mostly based on a Muhurtha (Auspicious time) for Gruharambham.

At the outset, a Muhurtha is got prescribed by a learned Astrologer for beginning the construction of the house (Gruharambha Muhurtham). Of course, it is nice if you resort to a ‘Daivadheenam' (God's blessings), through a Horary (Prasna) by a learned Astrologer, even before purchasing the land for constructing your Home/ Flat. You can verify with the Astrologer whether the land is suitable for making a Home for you and whether you can go ahead with the work of construction without any hindrance or the like things. Usually people will say that you should not begin such things when there is a fully pregnant woman waiting for child birth in your house or a very pretty old one is bed-ridden at that time.

The following 18 Nakshathras - Moolam, Makam, Rohini, Makayiram, Chathayam, Punartham, Pooyam, Uthram, Atham, Chithira, Uthradam, Thiruvonam, Avittam, Uthrittathy, Revathy, Ashwathy, Chothy, Anizham - are supposeed to be good for Gruharambham. Usually we do not take the 3rd, 5th and 7th Nakshathras from ours for all auspicious things. Of course, there are some exceptions for certain particular Nakshathras, which the Astrologer will tell you at that time. The Malayalam months like Mithunam, Karkkadakam, Kanni, Dhanu and Meenam are avoided for Gruharambham. You should never go for it, when the Sun is transiting through Karthika Nakshathram. There should not be Mars in the 8th house from the Muhurtha Lagna. The 4th house should be clean; no malefic is allowed there. Also avoid Sun in the Muhurtha Rasi.

The most important item in Gruharambham is laying the foundation stone or 'Adisthanashila'. It is called the 'Shilasthapanam'. So, it should be done exactly at the prescribed time for Gruharambham. Many people do a 'Bhoomipooja', before laying the foundation stone. Some are seen getting that stone blessed from their 'Ishta Devatha' Temple. Arranging a small pooja on the spot is very welcome, seeking the blessings of Lord Ganapathy and other Devathas, including Vastu. The excavation for foundation can be done little earlier to laying the first stone. But, it is a custom and almost a belief that at the time of the excavation for foundation, Bhoomi pooja can be done. The excavation should be started from the North-East corner (Eshana cone) of the plot and the Bhoomi pooja also should be arranged to be done at that part. Before starting excavation, usually a fresh stump from a jackfruit tree or from a tree having sap, is fixed first exactly at the NE corner. It is from that stump, string is connected to those at the other corners, to ear mark the area for excavation for the proposed house. Some people use the Muhurtha for Gruharambham for fixing this stump. It is not correct. The Muhurtha should be used for laying the foundation stone. Of course you can use a good time for fixing the stump also, just before laying the stone. You need avoid Rahukalam, Gulikakalam and Yamakandakalam, which are readily available in every Calendar.

How To Get Rid Of Ghosts & Evil Entities

How to get rid of ghosts , is not a question that all of us necessarily relate to, but there a large number of people who may be forced to find the answer to such a critical dilemma. The presence of a ghost may not necessarily be very evident in all situations. Depending on why the soul is existing in the 'preta avasta' (state of a ghost), the ghost may be violent or peaceful. You may have frequent ailments, repeated accidents or unexplainable fears as a result of the presence of ghosts in your house. The following is a powerful ritual that will help to get rid of ghosts and other evil entities from your house.

On a Friday morning , after finishing your bath, select an appropriate location in your house to perform the ritual/pooja (preferably in the north-east corner or any other clean area). Then wipe the floor with a wet and clean cloth. Now place a lamp in the center of the cleaned area. Place 5 threads with ghee(clarified butter) and light the lamp. The lamp should be kept alight throughout the day. Now place 3 fistfuls of rock salt in a copper bowl and take a few lemons (one lemon for each room in your house, plus 4 extra lemons). Place the lemons on a plate beside the lamp. Now take a few toothpicks and poke each lemon. Then keep some bananas on a plate, beside the lamp.

Now place a photo of Lord Narasimha / Nrisimha behind the lamp. Then take a pinch of rock salt with the ring finger, index finger and thumb of your right hand. Now chant the following mantra :

om ugrasimhaya ugrarowdraya maha moorthaye raksha raksha narasimha devaya namah
ॐ उग्रसिम्हाया उग्ररोव्द्राया महा मूर्थये रक्ष रक्ष नरसिम्हा देवाय नमः

Then put the salt over the poked lemons. Repeat this process until all the rock salt in the bowl is over. Now light some camphor in front of the lamp and pray to Lord Narasimha for protection. Then keep chanting om maha narasimhaya namaha ॐ महा नरसिम्हाय नमः  , and take the bowl of salt in your left hand. Now go around your house and sprinkle a pinch of the salt after every step that you take. Then place the lemons, one each, in your rooms. The extra four lemons have to be buried in the four sides of your house, at a depth of 4-5cm. [For people living in apartments/flats, sprinkle the salt around the border walls of your flat, and hang the lemons in the four sides of the flat]. Then wash your hands and feet thoroughly. Give the banana away to animals/birds. This ritual helps to form a powerful shield from ghosts for your house. Also, later when you invoke the power of Lord Narasimha into the home, it will form a container for the immense positive power, and hence help to vanquish the ghosts. At noon, light some incense sticks beside the lamp, and light some camphor in front of the lamp.

how to get rid of ghosts

In the evening, after you finish bathing, sit beside the lamp. Take a clay pot (or any other vessel which can bear heat) and place it beside the lamp. Now place some camphor and wooden chips in the pot and light it. Light another lamp beside the pot. Then take a fistful of dried whole black pepper on a plate. Now take each pepper in your right hand hand chant the following mantra :

om veerasimhaya ugrasimhaya rowdrasimhaya narasimhaya swaha
ॐ वीरसिम्हाय उग्रसिम्हाय रोव्द्रसिम्हाय नरसिम्हाय स्वः

After chanting the mantra, put the pepper into the pot. Keep repeating the ritual until all the peppers are over. (Put few wood chips in between to keep the fire burning). Then take 3 fistfuls of rice in a bowl. Keep chanting the mantra used for the black peppers and put a grain of rice into the pot after each repetition.

Now take a bowl of water in your right hand. Take some water in your right hand and chant the following mantra : om maha narasimhaya namah ॐ महा नरसिम्हाय नमः , and sprinkle the water all around and inside the house. Sprinkle everywhere in your house, including all metal objects, dresses and mirrors.

With the infinite grace of Lord Narasimha , the ghosts / evil entities will not be able to stay in or at the premises of your house anymore. Om

Rama Navami Pooja (final day)

On the Rama Navami day (Aptil 1st in 2012), try to make all your family members to participate in the pooja/ritual. In the morning after you finish your bath, light two lamps in front of Lord Rama, or light one lamp with five threads. Then place the plate which has the key, in front of the lamp(s), and open the cloth. Now place a bowl with some rice beside you and keep another plate in front of the lamp. On the second plate, keep a few bananas. Then chant the following mantra as you take rice in between the ring finger and thumb of your right hand :

om ramaya ramachandraya ramabhadrya namosthuthe raghunathaya nathaya sithayampathaye namah

Then shower the key with the grains of rice. Repeat this process 108 times. It can be done simultaneously by all your family members as well. Then chant "hare rama hare rama rama rama hare hare" as many times as possible. Now light camphor and shower the photo of Lord Rama with flowers. Then distribute the bananas among your family members and friends.

The key should then be tied in the same cloth without rice, and kept near the main door of your house. It can either be nailed over the frame of the main door or kept in a shelf beside the main door. If you have a lawn or empty area in front of your home, you can bury the key in front of your entrance. This will protect your house and family from all evil , and also ensure that you are all blessed with happiness and prosperity. Om

Rama Navami - First day pooja

Rama Navami celebrations are usually conducted over a period of 9 days, such that the ninth day falls on Rama Navami (which is on April 1st in 2012). Rama Navami is an apt occasion to change one's habits and to lead a more righteous life. The focus of this post is a simple ritual/pooja which anyone can perform for the betterment of their security, health, prosperity and happiness. I have split the rituals that have to be done during the 9 days of celebration , into 3 posts.

First Day (24th March 2012)
On the first day of Rama Navami celebration, make sure you finish your bath early in the morning. Then place a lamp in front of a photo of Lord Rama, and keep a new key (of any size) at the base of the lamp. Now keep 3 plates in front of the lamp. Now place few pieces of jaggery on one plate, this is meant for Lord Ganesha. Then keep some cooked rice on the second plate, this is meant for Lord Rama. In the third plate, keep few bananas, for Lord Hanuman. Now keep a bowl of ghee/honey near you. Then after all your family members are seated in front of Lord Rama's photo, light the lamp. Then together chant "om gum ganapathaye namah" 18 times. Then place the ring finger of your right hand on the rim of the plate which has jaggery. Then keep your left hand over the right hand and chant the following sloka 11 times.

om lambhodaraya ganapathaye kshipraprasadhaya mahabhala vigneshwaraya ekadantha gowriputhraya samarpiyami

Now wash your palms with a few drops of water and then let your family members chant "hare rama hare rama rama rama hare" while you perform the following rituals.

Take a spoon and hold it by the curved end. Now dip the handle of the spoon in honey/ghee and then hold the spoon over the rice, such that drops of honey/ghee fall over it. Then chant the following mantra 11 times as the drops of ghee/honey fall over the rice :

om ramachandraya namosthuthe om shree rama ramaya samarpiyami

Then wash your palms with a few drops of water. Now peel one side of the bananas which you have kept in the third plate, and chant the following mantra 5 times :

om ramabhakthaya vajradehaya namosthuthe om vayuputhraya samarpiyami

Then wash your palms again with water. Now end your pooja by lighting camphor and showering the photo with flowers. Then you may take the edibles on the plates and distribute it among your family members. Keep the key at the base of the lamp for sometime and then tie it in a piece of cloth and place on a plate in front of Lord Rama's photo. Thus ends the  first day's Rama Navami pooja.

Rama Navami

Rama Navami is said to be the celebration of Lord Rama's birth. In this 2012, Rama Navami falls on 01st April. This auspicious occasion should be made use of to atone for our sins and acquire the infinite grace of Lord Rama. It is often said that chanting Lord Rama's name once is equivalent to chanting Lord Vishnu's name a thousand times. This post is the first in a series of posts on Lord Rama as a celebration of Rama Navami.

ram navami
The rituals related to Rama Navami may be started 7-9 days, such that they culminate on the Navami day. It is advisable to make the whole family participate in such prayers so that the benefits fall upon everyone equally. At the night before the day on which you wish to start performing the Rama Navami related rituals, clean the pooja room or a corner of your house (preferably the north-east, or south-west), and keep a lamp there. Now place a lamp beside the lamp. Now, place a photo of Lord Rama behind the lamp. Then, sit in front of the lamp and chant the following mantra 41 times, while holding your right hand over the centre of your head, and the left hand over your navel :

om hari shree dasharathanandanaya shree bhakthavalsalaya namo namah

ॐ हरी श्री दश्रधनंदनाया श्री भक्थ्वाल्सलाया नमो नमः

Mrityunjaya mantra is one of the most powerful mantras of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva is said to be easily appeased when called upon with this mantra. The mrityunjaya mantra can be used for various purposes based on the associated rituals. The following is a simple ritual that can be done by couples to bring back peace, love and happiness into their life.

In the morning, after bathing, sit in front of a photo of lord shiva. Place a lamp beside the photo and light it. Keep a clean plate in front of the lamp. Now take two small pots and place them on the plate. Fill the pot to the right with water (about 150ml). Now take a tulsi leaf in your right hand and hold it with your ring finger and thumb.  Dip the tulsi leaf into the water present in the pot and then hold it over the other pot, letting the water drops fall into the empty pot. Chant the Mrityunjaya Mantra (click the link if you do not know the mantra) while letting the water fall into the empty pot. Keep repeating the Mrityunjaya Mantra in a slow pace as you continue the ritual. Maintain a constant rhythm for the mantra and the ritual.

Have an image of Lord Shiva as the great Mrityunjaya (the one who has victory over death). Repeat the ritual until all the water is transferred from one pot to the other. The ritual can be especially effective for couples who want to overcome miseries or difficulties in their life. The ritual can be started by the husband and then continued by the wife. After the ritual is over, the family members can drink the water while chanting Om Namah Shivaya thrice.

Practise this ritual on a saturday or morning. With the infinite grace of Lord Mrityunjaya, your family will be blessed with happiness and all your miseries will be overcome.

Om

Mahashivaratri is one of the most awaited nights in the Hindu calendar. Shivaratri is a time of devotion and transformation. It is a time to showcase our gratitude and love to Lord Shiva, the great destroyer. The mere sacrifice of sleep or specific eatables does not necessarily help in taking us closer to salvation. There are several legends that are related to Shivaratri, but in this post we shall focus on how to make the best use of this divine day.

Festivals like Mahashivaratri need to be used to rejuvenate one's belief in the supreme power of god. Devotion is the measuring stick for all individuals in god's eyes. Make sure that even if you spend only one minute for your prayer, do it with sincere devotion. The following is a simple ritual that can be done on Mahashivaratri to get the infinite blessings of Lord Shiva :

Mahashivaratri

After you finish bathing in the evening, light a lamp in front of Lord Shiva's photo. Now place a small bowl of ghee in front of the lamp. Take a fistful of washed rice and keep it in a plate. Now sit in front of the lamp with your family and make each member keep some rice in fornt of them as told above. Take a grain of rice in your right hand , in between the thumb and ring finger, and chant the following mantra :

Om Namah Shivaya MahaRudraya MahaDevaya Namah

ॐ नमः शिवाय महारुद्राया महादेवाय नमः

Place the grain of rice into the bowl of ghee after each time that you chant the above MahaShiva Mantra. After the rice finishes, light camphor in front of the lamp and pray to Lord Shiva sincerely, asking him to shower his divine grace on your family. Then give the ghee and rice to ants and birds by spreading it in an open area. This ritual will help to atone for your sins and Lord Shiva's blessings will remove all your diseases, poverty and miseries.

Then take a small vessel filled with honey and banana pieces, and place it in front of the lamp.
Now invoke Lord Ganesha to ensure that the pooja does not face any obstacles. Chant "Om gum ganapathaye namah" 11 times and offer flowers to the base of the lamp.
Now start to chant the following mantras of Lord Murugan/ Subrahmanya :
