Simple ritual to improve mental functions

The Banyan tree has great significance in Hinduism. Even in a scientific perspective, Banyan trees are of great value to the environment. They are one of the longest living things in the world (there have been claims of banyan trees that are more than 2500 years old !!!). The large foliage cover and plentiful fruits that they provide act as mini ecosystems on their own by providing shelter to a large number of animals. Also, it is even said that Banyan trees are on par with the Ozone layer in terms of purification and protection. These may be some of the reasons why our great sages conferred so much respect and importance to the Banyan tree.

The following is a simple ritual to counter the malefic effects of mercury and to improve peace of mind, intelligence, mental functioning, reduce tensions, etc. This ritual is highly beneficial for young employees and students. Every day, after bathing in the morning, stand in front of a banyan tree and chant the following mantras (3 times each) :

om buudesaya namah
om sravyaya namah
om sreyaya namah
om aiswaryavaradaya namah
om gyanamayaya namah
om prathama poojithaya namah
om viswasthannave namah
om aanandapoorithaya namah
om shaddguna sevyaya namah
om kanakadarine namah
om vishnuve namah
om paramatmane namah

Then while chanting 'om shree paramatmane namah' , perform a circumambulation (pradakshina) of the the Banyan tree 7 times.

Repeat this simple prayer for 11 consecutive days. Make sure that you perform the ritual and the chanting slowly , without being in any haste. Try to breathe slowly and deeply and clear your mind of any negative thoughts. It is also highly recommended to sit under a Banyan tree and chant the mantra for a few mins.

Durga Mantra To Protect Business

Starting a business is tough enough under normal circumstances. But most often there are people who face continuous unexpected struggles and external obstacles from the moment their business is initialized. The following is a simple ritual that can be done by business people to protect the prosperity of their business and to help them in facing obstacles.

On a thursday night, keep a coconut and a lemon in any corner of the shop (on the ground) on top of a red cloth. Then on the next day evening (friday evening) , after lighting a lamp in your shop, take a few grains of rice in your right hand and chant the following durga devi mantra 21 times:

om shree shree tripurasundari lokamata sarva baadha nashaya om

Then continue chanting the mantra and sprinkle the rice on top of the coconut and lemon, without letting it go out of the red cloth. Tie the coconut ,rice and lemon in the red cloth. While chanting the mantra, take the whole bunch to a river or deserted area and throw it away. Immediately start walking from there, without turning back. Repeat this ritual for 5 consecutive fridays, it will help to remove negative energies that may be disrupting your business. Om

Shivaratri - Simple Mantra & Ritual For Happiness & Moksha

Om Namah Shivaya...Shivaratri is a rare and greatly auspicious occasion where one can easily escape from the clutches of 'kali' (negativity/evil) in this kali yuga. No matter how severe your sins are, you can overcome them and attain moksha if you just repent for your mistakes and prostrate in front of Lord Shiva atleast once with sincere devotion on Shivaratri (Shivaratri falls on March 10th, Sunday in 2013). It is believed that on Shivaratri, even abstract paintings of Lord Shiva will be powerful enough to grant boons. The following is a very simple ritual which anybody can follow to wash their sins away and attain the blessings of Lord Shiva on this holy Shivaratri.

In the morning, after bathing, light a lamp in front of a photo of Lord Shiva. Then chant 'om ganapathaye namah , om lambodharaya namah, om ekadantaya namah' and pray to Lord Ganesha to remove any obstacles in your prayer. Then keep the tips of your fingers at the base of the lamp and close your eyes. Visualize that you are holding the feet of Lord Shiva. In your mind , sincerely apologize for the mistakes/sins which you may have knowingly or unknowingly performed. Then chant the following simple Shiva mantra

om shiva shiva hara hara mahadeva shiva shiva hara hara neelakanda shiva shiva hara hara gowrishankara namosthuthe

ॐ शिव शिव हर हर महादेव शिव शिव हर हर नीलकंडा शिव शिव हर हर गौरीशंकर नमोस्थुथे

Repeat the mantra loudly or in your mind as many times as possible, while showering the base of the lamp with flowers (if you can use 'bilva leaves' then it is greatly auspicious). Then take some water in your right hand and gently pour it at the base of the lamp while chanting 'om namah shivaya' 11 times. Then prostrate in front of Lord Shiva and ask for his blessings. Do not ask for the destruction of any enemies, only pray that you should have the infinite compassion and blessings of Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati always. God knows what is best for you.

Throughout the day, chant 'Om namah shivaya' whenever you can. You can do it in your home, shop, office, etc. regardless of what you are doing. If possible, donate some food to a poor hungry person and to some animal. If performed with sincere devotion, the above mentioned simple shivaratri ritual will wash away all your sins and release you from all suffering. I would like to reiterate that 'sincere' devotion is the only requirement for moksha. May Lord Shiva bless everyone with peace, happiness and moksha. Om namah shivaya

Simple New Year Ritual- for happiness, health and prosperity

Om.With the advent of a new year, everyone’s mind is sure to be filled with hope for some positive change in life. This post is about a simple new year ritual which anybody can perform to cleanse their body and soul , so as to invite positive divine blessing for a better year ahead. On December 31st or January 1st,  after you finish your morning bath, take a bowl of water and place it in front of a photo/idol of your favourite god/goddess (based on your convenience, you may also light a lamp on either side of the lamp). Then take a fistful of salt and place it on a plate beside you. Now take a pinch of salt with the thumb and ring finger of your right hand. Now chant the following well-known sloka :

Om asathoma sathgamaya thamosoma jyothirgamaya mrityorma amruthamgamaya

[The above sloka is a request to get God's blessings so that we are guided towards truth, brightness/prosperity and immortality/health]

Then chant the following mantra which is a general prostration to the God of the universe, village and family (though they are all the same supreme God we are just paying respect to the various forms )

Om namo parabrahmane hara shree gramadevatayai hari shree paradevatayai namosthuthe

Then put the salt into the bowl of water. Repeat this process until all the salt in the plate has been transferred into the bowl of water. Then keep the bowl of water closed for atleast 41mins. Then take this bowl of water and pour it over your whole body and then take a bath (it can be done in the evening also). This simple ritual is a great cleanser of negativity from the body and mind.

Om.Please do share your resolutions, plans and wishes for 2013 in the comments below.

Glimpses of life after Death.

[This is a guest post by Mr. M.Prasad.You can also submit similar articles by visiting the YOUR CONTENT page. ]

I had the privilege of going through, and assimilating the knowledge from many many books in this regard.
Sorry I am not a guru, and I don’t want to preach.
After visiting this Web site, I just wanted to share my knowledge with you.
Since a long time, I was interested in what happens to the bodies after death. The physical bodies are either cremated or buried. So the physical aspect may be given a goodbye.
Hence the soul form only travels to the next part or faces the music, if you believe in the soul. Else no problem at all, ‘cause the life ended with the death. That’s all.
For believers then, the soul form travels to another loka, i.e., Pitruloka temporarily. There the soul is put to trial. All his/her actions that have earned a point, both positive and negative are played before the soul. One cannot say ‘No’ because, there was a witness that resided in your heart and ready to testify. You cannot bluff. Then, depending on your record and points earned, you are given a choice to enter into the human form.
The soul is given a choice. The soul will know the wombs available at that time, and what happens to this particular soul, while living as the child of these parents (future life!).
It is the soul then that makes the decision which womb to enter. The soul may not fulfill all its desires in that particular birth. Because it has chosen to be born to that particular mother, the final plan in seed form is also carried by the individual soul. These are the Past life’s contacts, memories, desires etc. That’s how one gets a Dejavu feeling some times.
Every soul wants to be born in a rich family, wants to have beautiful wives/husbands and everything the best in life… But alas! One cannot get it. ‘Cause the points in your balance are limited. You have to earn more points, to deserve more! Earning those points is possible only on earth. Hence come back to earth, do good things, get more points, go back… and return. That is the cycle.
Why don’t we remember our past lives? The physical brain that is the storehouse of all the memories is already destroyed. And the soul form carries only that which is necessary for the present life. Still traces may remain and that is Dejavu!
If you remember your past life, you cannot live fully in the present life. There would be conflict of interests. It may lead to chaos!! Only the Almighty is capable of remembering all his and our past lives. That’s his job. Else he cannot justify the options given to the soul to be born as such and such.
Hence if you are a believer in God, and believer in rebirths, then please do good things only, as to amass more points on earth, so that you can live a life of your choice later. Got it? It is so simple.

Kindly share your views on Death, in the comments below.

Diwali Aiswarya Pooja - For Wealth, Health, Success & Happiness

Diwali is a time for celebration, grandeur, happiness and most of all - devotion. Diwali is the best time to bring the family together and overcome common problems. The following is a special ‘Diwali Aiswarya Pooja’ which is said to usher in auspiciousness and shower prosperity on the family which conducts it. This Diwali Aiswarya Pooja can also help to bring better understanding between quarrelling family members, better health for children and success for the head of the family.

On the night before Diwali, clean a section of your ‘pooja room’ or ‘living room’ and sprinkle a pinch of powdered salt on the floor and then keep things ready for the next day’s Diwali pooja.

On the day of Diwali, after everyone finishes their bath in the morning (ideally before 7am), keep a photo or idol of Lord Vishnu or Lord Krishna . Then light a lamp in front of the photo/idol. You may light any number of lamps to enhance the beauty of the pooja area, but keep one main lamp in front of the photo/idol and place it on a plate. Also light a few incense sticks beside the photo. You may also place garlands on the idol/photo or place some flowers at the base of the idol/photo. Now place a folded cloth or mat and sit in front of the lamp (preferably the whole family should sit down n take part, elders can sit on chairs also). Then the head of the family (or anyone who has genuine interest) can sit beside the main lamp and perform the following pooja.
diwali

Take a bowl of rice and a bowl of sugar, and keep it beside you. Take a grain of rice with the ring finger and thumb of your right hand and chant the following : om vakratundaya ekadantaya lambhodaraya namosthuthe. Then place the grain of rice at the foot of the main lamp. Now take a pinch of sugar in the same way and place it at the foot of the lmap after chanting the same mantra. Repeat this process 7 times, such that you provide rice and sugar alternately. This is done to appease Lord Ganesha and to get his blessings so that there may be no obstacles in the pooja and in the household.

diwali

Now dip your right hand in water to wash off any excess sugar or rice, and then place your right palm over your left palm and chant : om namo narayanaya ,21 times along with your family members.
Then take some rice with the ring finger, middle finger and thumb of your right hand and chant the following sloka (other members of the family can chant along with you) :

om namo bhagavathe vasudevaya govinda
veera raja mangaladayaka prajapati namo
mukunda sarvadevata hari shree namah om

and then place the rice at the foot of the lamp. Repeat the same with sugar. Continue the above process 108 times. Then chant om namo narayanaya as many times as you wish and maybe even sing a few bhajans to enhance the devotional atmosphere.

In the end, light some camphor and perform aarti in front of the photo. Then take the rice and sugar mixture and boil it in water. You may all consume this Prasad after your lunch.

Hope you have a happy and prosperous Diwali.

[Tip: to keep track of the number of chants without diverting your attention, keep aside an equivalent number of flowers or dried black pepper. For example, if you are supposed to chant a mantra 21 times, then keep aside 21 flowers on a plate, so that you can move one flower after chanting the mantra once. This will prevent you from worrying about losing track of the number of repetitions. ]

My experience with Devi Sthotras

I was facing life's toughest days during the second half of 2010 while at Dubai, mainly caused by the envy at work place which has gradually developed in to a situation where the relationship between me and my boss has started deteriorating. The bad element for this was a fellow worker, who has done all sort of malicious things to expel me from the job. But I don't have any other supports from any corner, a real helpless situation; I called my local astrologer and he advised me chant the slokas of Devi either in the morning or evening infront of a oil lamp. The slokas advised to me were Dala Strotham, Hryudaya Sthrotam and Kavacha strotham for 40 days, 11 time each days.

Miracle happened, subsequently while at job I was served with a termination notice by my Boss, but I don't know I got a sudden energy and boldness to fight back and argue with my Boss which has resulted in to cancellation of the termination letter.

Thanks to God and deity Devi for her blessings I am still continuing in that Job in Dubai.

Where Is God ? - Swami Padmanabha

[This is a Guest Post by Swami Padmanabha. You can also submit your guest posts to be published by visiting the YOUR CONTENT page]

WHERE IS GOD ? WHERE IS GOD ? WHERE IS GOD ? This is a question which i come across almost on a daily basis in my ashram. Almost every alternate person who visits me seems to have this same question in their mind. I feel that onlyhinduism is the most appropriate portal to answer this question and let fellow Hindus know of my opinion.

We are so involved in the legends and puranas that a majority of us believe that God is only in heaven and will descend to Earth only in the form of an avatar. And we expect that such avatars will come only when evil has reached it's zenith. I always advice people that, God resides in our mind from the moment that we are born. As we increase our consciousness, we begin to know that God better. We start giving God different names and become closer to a particular physical form of God which appeals to us the most.

God always guides us as part of our conscience, and always leads us towards the path of righteousness. But, it is us who seldom pay heed to those words and continue our sins. Even when a robber is about steal something for the first time, his conscience will surely try to prevent him from doing so. Only when he pushes aside that divine guidance, he ends up being a sinner.

I am of the opinion that we will never find God if we look around for God to come in his 'divine avatar', with four hands or snakes as ornaments or riding a lion. Those are all projections of divinity which help us to bring more respect and awe in our mind. God has given us a sound min through which he/she constantly contacts us. So keep that mind pure and receptive to the divine guidance of God. Try to identify the good in everything and everyone and to make practical considerations while taking decisions, then you will be blessed by God in all your endeavors.

Instead of asking 'where is God?', it would be more apt to ask 'where not is God?', for God is everywhere and God is everything. Om namah.

Clarity Of Thought Mantra

It is very common for us to not have clarity while trying to take important decisions. We may not be under any apparent pressure, nor is it necessary to even be aware of such an issue. But, whenever we are presented with options to make decisions on something important, we get too lost in thoughts. Such problems are often attributed to displeasure from the moon (chandra). The following is a simple ritual that such people can use to have more clarity in thoughts and to make better decisions.

On a Monday night , stare at the moon and chant "om chandraya namah" 11 times. Then from the next day, chant the following mantra 9 times every night for 14 consecutive nights.

om namo chandraya somaya mahadeva namah

You can also practice subtle meditation while chanting "om chandraya namah" 108 times for 21 consecutive days. Soon you will have more will-power, better decision-making and peace of mind.

Nag Panchami

Nag Panchami (falls on July 8th in 2012 ) is a festival of great significance in many parts of India. Since time immemorial, snakes have been revered and feared due to their mysterious movement and toxic venom. Nag Panchami is an occasion to show respect and appease the snake gods. Many households do pooja on this day to protect their families from snake bites and to get rid of Kaal Sarpa Dosha. Nag Panchami is celebrated differently in various parts of India and Nepal. But, one common custom on Nag Panchami, is to feed snakes with milk and to pray at temples of Lord Shiva.

According to some legends, it is said that Lord Krishna's famous conquest of the dreaded snake Kalia took place on Nag Panchami. It is also said to be an auspicious time to bring welfare into the family.

Unmarried women may use Nag Panchami as a holy occasion to appease the Gods and get a good husband. On the day of Nag Panchami, one should get up early in the morning and finish bathing. Then take a bowl of milk to a nearby Shiva or Murugan temple and give for abhisheka. Then after returning from the temple, the devotee may have the milk as prasad. The rest of the day should involve prayers to Lord Shiva or Lord Murugan. In the evening, the devotee may keep a bowl of milk with a teaspoon of honey beside a lamp and chant mantras of Lord Shiva. This will help to relieve the effects of any dosha that is acting as a hurdle in getting married.

Nagas or Snakes are said to be present in the pathala loka. The following is a mantra that contains the name of the great nagas according to scriptures. It is said that chanting this mantra will help to appease the revered snakes and will bring welfare to the family.

Housewarming Kerala Style - Simplified (Part 2)

Coming to Gruhapravesham, the same procedure used for Gruharambham, can be followed as far as the Muhurtham is concerned. The rituals may vary a little in that it will be nice if the Gruhapravesham is done immediately after the Ganapathy Homam in the early morning during the time of Sunrise at that location. Early morning is always supposed to be good or you can go for a good Muhurtham for the purpose by a learned Astrologer. Appropriate offerings should be made to Bhara Devatha and in local temples also, before Gruhapravesham.

Usually the Pooja is arranged in front of the house towards one side, by the Sthapathy (Moothassari). It is nice that no one should be at the house when the family first enters into the house. It is well and good if it is possible to go round the house (Pradikshanam / circumambulate) once by the members of the family, headed by the lady of the house carrying the lighted lamp in both hands, obtained from the Sthapathy, after giving him the 'Sampradaya Dakshina', accompanied by the man of the house with the treasure chest in his hand, followed by other members of the family, with milk and pot, water-pot (Kumbhakudam) etc. Using the right leg, they should enter the house, and the lighted lamp should be placed at the North-East corner of the room, where they entered first. From the same lamp, the lady of the house can ignite the hearth in the kitchen, for boiling the milk. Afterwards, the milk should be given to all present at the function. The workers or laborers should be paid first, tips as a token of indebtedness towards them for having built the house for the family. It is advisable to give a lime along with a betel leaf to everyone irrespective of those with gifts.

In either case, whether it is Gruharambham or Gruhapravesham, you should be present on the spot on the second day, to avoid the so called 'Vischithi dosham'. You should stay and sleep over the night on the second day also in your new house.

Your Home is a 'Devalayam'; the man there is the Chief Deity, the lady of the house-hold is the Goddess, and the children are Upa Devathas. This concept will bring prosperity to your Home. Whatever you have, belongs to God; you are only a Caretaker. Do all unto Him with full Providence and Dharma. “Dharmo rakshathy, rakshitha”- Dharma, when protected, protects the follower. The End.

Housewarming Kerala Style - Simplified (Part 1)

House warming ceremony or Gruhapravesham or 'Palukachu' in Malayalam, is done after the construction of a house, which is mostly based on a Muhurtha (Auspicious time) for Gruharambham.

At the outset, a Muhurtha is got prescribed by a learned Astrologer for beginning the construction of the house (Gruharambha Muhurtham). Of course, it is nice if you resort to a ‘Daivadheenam' (God's blessings), through a Horary (Prasna) by a learned Astrologer, even before purchasing the land for constructing your Home/ Flat. You can verify with the Astrologer whether the land is suitable for making a Home for you and whether you can go ahead with the work of construction without any hindrance or the like things. Usually people will say that you should not begin such things when there is a fully pregnant woman waiting for child birth in your house or a very pretty old one is bed-ridden at that time.

The following 18 Nakshathras - Moolam, Makam, Rohini, Makayiram, Chathayam, Punartham, Pooyam, Uthram, Atham, Chithira, Uthradam, Thiruvonam, Avittam, Uthrittathy, Revathy, Ashwathy, Chothy, Anizham - are supposeed to be good for Gruharambham. Usually we do not take the 3rd, 5th and 7th Nakshathras from ours for all auspicious things. Of course, there are some exceptions for certain particular Nakshathras, which the Astrologer will tell you at that time. The Malayalam months like Mithunam, Karkkadakam, Kanni, Dhanu and Meenam are avoided for Gruharambham. You should never go for it, when the Sun is transiting through Karthika Nakshathram. There should not be Mars in the 8th house from the Muhurtha Lagna. The 4th house should be clean; no malefic is allowed there. Also avoid Sun in the Muhurtha Rasi.

The most important item in Gruharambham is laying the foundation stone or 'Adisthanashila'. It is called the 'Shilasthapanam'. So, it should be done exactly at the prescribed time for Gruharambham. Many people do a 'Bhoomipooja', before laying the foundation stone. Some are seen getting that stone blessed from their 'Ishta Devatha' Temple. Arranging a small pooja on the spot is very welcome, seeking the blessings of Lord Ganapathy and other Devathas, including Vastu. The excavation for foundation can be done little earlier to laying the first stone. But, it is a custom and almost a belief that at the time of the excavation for foundation, Bhoomi pooja can be done. The excavation should be started from the North-East corner (Eshana cone) of the plot and the Bhoomi pooja also should be arranged to be done at that part. Before starting excavation, usually a fresh stump from a jackfruit tree or from a tree having sap, is fixed first exactly at the NE corner. It is from that stump, string is connected to those at the other corners, to ear mark the area for excavation for the proposed house. Some people use the Muhurtha for Gruharambham for fixing this stump. It is not correct. The Muhurtha should be used for laying the foundation stone. Of course you can use a good time for fixing the stump also, just before laying the stone. You need avoid Rahukalam, Gulikakalam and Yamakandakalam, which are readily available in every Calendar.

Who Is Saraswati Devi ?

[ This is a Guest Post by Mr.C.S.Moorthy (Thank You). You can send us your guest posts through the YOUR CONTENT page]

Rig veda is the oldest treatise in our culture which dates back to many thousands of years. The Rishis who compiled the Rig Veda did mention Saraswati, Ila and Bharati in the mantras. They did not formulate the mantras they were mantra drashtas. They saw the mantras in action.
What they saw in action they have faithfully narrated through the mantras.Since they had this extraordinary perception they were known as 'vipras'.

What did they see? They certainly did not see any unique being sitting on a lotus with veena in her hand and wearing a white saree. They saw the marvellous activity of the human system in its intricate working. They found that human body was made up of a large number of cells. Broadly there were three groups: a) neurons, b)blood vessels and c) flesh and muscle. Neurons were unique because they were concerned with sensory activities. They named it Saraswati. Brain can carry on its function only because of neurons which ensures connectivity with every nook and corner of our body. We cannot see these neuron cells as they are minute. Neurons are assisted in their activity by Axons (Ila) and Dendrites (Bharati) as modern science has discovered only in the last 50 years or so. Modern science has derived their knowledge through mathematical formula a tentative finding at best!
